We are studying the life of Joseph and we began seeing how God, The Great Planner was maneuvering and orchestrating his life bringing him into the fullness of the dream God had for him. That same God is planning your life today.
We saw how…
Joseph was forsaken.
Joseph was falsely accused.
Today we will see how…
- Joseph was Forgotten
While in prison, Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh’s butler and baker. The butler is so excited at hearing he would be set free within 3 days and Joseph asks him to remember him when it is well with him and to speak a good word for him to Pharaoh. But once out of prison and doing well, the butler forgot all about Joseph.
Genesis 40:1-23 NKJV
It came to pass after these things that the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker. 3 So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while. 5 Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s dream with its own interpretation.
6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were sad. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in the custody of his lord’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”
Joseph is in prison with such a positive attitude. He was in prison, but prison wasn’t in him.
8 And they said to him, “We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” So Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.”
9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, 10 and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. 11 Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”
12 And Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days. 13 Now within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your place, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler.
14 But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house. 15 For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.”
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream, and there were three white baskets on my head. 17 In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”
18 So Joseph answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.”
20 Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. 21 Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. 22 But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
They both have dreams and within 3 days their dreams come to pass. Joseph has a dream that he will ascend above his brothers and at this time in prison with the butler and baker, its eleven years later from the time he had his dream, and still nothing seems to be happening.
That can be a very frustrating place. You had a dream to accomplish great things and still nothing seems to be happening. You never saw yourself going through what you went through.
Make sure your dream is from God, not something you dreamed up by yourself.
While Joseph is in prison, he is serving the butler and the baker. He’s maintaining a positive attitude. He is helping the butler and baker, in making their dreams come to pass.
What is God showing us? While you are waiting for your dream to happen, keep serving, maintain a positive attitude, keep living right before God and help another person accomplish their dream. The quickest way to make your dream happen is to help make somebody else’s dream happen.
You might be in that place today where you think God has forgotten about you like others have. But He hasn’t.
Have you ever helped people, been there for them in their time of need but when you needed them, they were not there for you? Situations like these lead to disappointment, then anger and if you are not careful, and if you don’t take authority over your feelings and your emotions, it can lead to bitterness and resentment.
David’s Father, Jesse; forgot about David. He never included him in the line-up when the Prophet Samuel came to anoint one of his sons as kings. David was out in the field looking after the sheep and nobody thought that he would be the next king of Israel. But when they saw a shepherd boy, God saw a king.
You might be in that place today where you feel forgotten by others and perhaps you think God has also forgotten about you. But God has not! He knows exactly where you are and when you are ready, God will come and fetch you.
Psalm 105:17-22 NKJV
17 He sent a man before them—
Joseph—who was sold as a slave.
18 They hurt his feet with fetters,
He was laid in irons.
19 Until the time that his word came to pass,
The word of the Lord tested him.
20 The king sent and released him,
The ruler of the people let him go free.
21 He made him lord of his house,
And ruler of all his possessions,
22 To bind his princes at his pleasure,
And teach his elders wisdom.
The favor of God produces promotion and recognition even when you seem to be the least likely to receive it.
David was the least likely to be anointed as king according to human standards. David was where he was supposed to be, looking after the sheep. Don’t leave your post. Stay faithful. Use your gift where you are. Joseph used his gift in Potiphar’s house and in the prison, which opened the door for his gift to be used in the palace with Pharaoh. God will never give you a gift and then not give you the platform to express your gift. Don’t promote yourself. Let God do the announcing in your life. Your time is coming.
Proverbs 18:16 NKJV
A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.
Isaiah 49:14-16 NKJV
But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.”15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. 16 See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;Your walls are continually before Me.
You are in the palms of God’s hands. He knows exactly where you are, and He knows how to exalt and promote you.
Don’t be bitter towards her or anyone else who has forgotten you. Your life is in God’s hands.
Genesis 42:36 NKJV
And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin. All these things are against me.”
He was so consumed with grief and sorrow that he thought all these things were against him, and yet all these things were for him.
What is God saying? Trust Me. Even when things don’t make sense, trust Me. Trust Me even when you cannot trace Me. Even when you cannot see My hand, trust My heart.
Psalm 31:14-15 NLT
14 But I am trusting you, O Lord,
saying, “You are my God!”
15 My future is in your hands.
Rescue me from those who hunt me down relentlessly.
(NKJV) – My times are in your hands
(TPT) – My life, my every moment, my destiny is in Your hands.
Like Joseph, help other people reach their dreams. Help others to the top and before you know it, God’s favour will promote you to your palace and place of power. Like Joseph forgive your brothers who forsook you and threw you in the pit. Forgive Potiphars wife and those who falsely accused you. Forgive the butler and those who forgot you in your time of need. Because your times are in God’s hands.
