                  Take Authority Over The Devil

If you are a born again child of God, then Jesus has given you authority in this earth over satan and his demonic forces.

Why is it important for you to know this? Because the devil will take advantage of you in this life and hinder you continually if you let him.

Yes! You heard right, “If you let him”.

Jesus has given you the authority to do something about the devil because He has already done something about it. Jesus defeated him over 2000 years ago on the cross.

We must take authority over the devil and put him under our feet where he belongs.

Let me share a story that I read in the book “The Authority of the Believer” by Kenneth E. Hagin.

He says, In 1952 he had a vision. In this vision Jesus was talking with him. While Jesus was talking to him, a demon ran up between the two of them. It looked a lot like a monkey but it’s face was more human looking. It jumped up and down and began to put out something like a black cloud, a smoke screen.

He says, it became hard to see Jesus. The demon began to say, “Yakety yak yak! Yakety yak yak”. Jesus kept talking but he couldn’t hear what He was saying.

Brother Hagin thought to himself, Doesn’t Jesus know I can’t hear what He’s saying! Doesn’t He know I’m not getting what He’s saying!

And then he thought, “why doesn’t Jesus tell him to stop! Doesn’t He know I can’t hear Him?”

Finally, in desperation, and without really thinking, Brother Hagin, pointed his finger at that little demon and said, “I command you to cease and desist in Jesus’ name!”

When he said those words, that little demon hit the floor, “kerflop”! The black cloud disappeared, and he just lay on the floor, shaking and trembling like a little whipped pup, crying and whining.

Then Jesus said something that startled Brother Hagin. He said to him, “If you hadn’t done something about that evil spirit, I couldn’t have”.

He thought he never heard correctly. He said to Jesus, “You said you wouldn’t have, is that correct”. Jesus said, “No! I said, I couldn’t have done something about it.”

Why? Because when Jesus rose from the grave, he delegated His authority to us. He told us to cast the devil out of our affairs.

Jesus said to Brother Hagin, “To pray that I, the Lord Jesus Christ, or that God the Father would do anything about the devil is to waste your time.”

A lot of Christians are wasting their time asking God to do something about the devil. He’s already done something about it.

1 John 3:8 NKJV
... For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

Jesus defeated the devil in His death, burial and ressurrection.

Colossians 2:15 NKJV
And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

The believer is now expected to exercise his rightful authority over the devil.

Jesus said, “In every letter that’s written to the Church – to believers – if the writer of that letter said anything about the devil, he always told believers that THEY were to do something about the devil.

Believers, not God, must exercise Authority over the devil.

Matthew 28:18-19 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."

If Jesus had stopped speaking at Verse 18, you would have said, “You see Jesus, you have authority in Heaven and on Earth, you do something about the devil”.

But Jesus continued in Verse 19 and said,

19 Go therefore…”

Jesus had authority over all the power of the enemy, but then He turned around and gave that authority over to us and said we must go in His name.

Mark 16:17 NKJV
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils …

Believers would not be able to cast out devils if they didn’t have authority over them.

Luke 10:17-19 NKJV
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Many times we just bow down and let the devil run over us, waiting for God to do something about the devil, when we just need to take our stand against him with the Word and put him on the run.

We need to do something about the adverse circumstances in our own lives by taking authority over satan and standing our ground against him with the Word, claiming what belongs to us.

Another scriptural witness that believers have the authority on the earth over the devil is…

James 4:7 NKJV
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

James was writing to the Church – to believers – when he told them to resist the devil.

Jesus said to Brother Hagin, “James didn’t say, “Get your Pastor to resist the devil for you”, or “get fellow Christians to resist the devil for you”. He said, “You resist the devil”.

You couldn’t resist the devil if you didn’t have authority over him.

When you submit to God, the devil has no choice but to submit to you when you resist him.

The word “flee” means “to run away from as in terror.”

Demons and evil spirits are not afraid of us, but they are afraid of Jesus, whom we represent. Therefore, because we are in Christ, they will flee from us when we take authority over them in Jesus Name.

Satan can’t take any authority in your life unless you give him authority.

Of course, if you don’t exercise your authority over him or take your stand against him in the tests and trials he brings against you, then nothing will be done about the situation, because you are the one in authority on the earth through Jesus’ name.

It’s time for you to rise up in the authority that Jesus has given you and begin to resist the devil.
