                           The Mercies of God

Psalm 145v8-9 NKJV

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion; slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all; and His tender mercies are over all His works.

Do you know that you are one of God’s works? You are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:10) and His tender mercies are over you.

These two verses reveal the nature and character of who God is.

The Lord is...gracious

He is disposed or inclined to you show favour and He likes to do good things for you.

The Lord is…full of compassion

He is absolutely overflowing with love for you. He cares deeply about everything that concerns you and has promised never to leave or forsake you. Because He loves you as a father, He wants you to succeed and be blessed even more than you do.

The Lord is…slow to anger and great in mercy

When you disobey Him or make a mistake, He’s not quick to punish you or make you pay. He just asks you to repent and confess your sin so that He can forgive it and help you get back inside His circle of Blessing. Even if you’ve been a repeat offender and you are afraid you’ve worn out God’s patience, He’ll still receive you with open arms when you turn to Him.

The Lord is…good to all and His tender mercies are over all His works.

God doesn’t have a great plan for one person and a lousy plan for another. He doesn’t love one of His children more than another. He has a glorious plan for every one of us because He loves us equally and He is good to all! His plans for each person will be different because we are all unique. But you can be sure His plan for you will be just as good for you as mine is for me.

So those two verses that we just studied now, reveal the nature and character of who God is.

Charles Spurgeon

It is God’s nature to bless. It is His pre-rogative to bless. It is His glory to bless. And it is His delight to bless. Blessing us over and over and with more and more will not impoverish God.

It is God’s disposition to be gracious, to be full of compassion, to be slow to anger, and to be of great mercy. It is not God’s nature or character to hurt you, inflict pain on you or to withhold any good thing from you. God’s nature is a loving and giving nature.

The phrase, “full of compassion” could also be translated “merciful”. Many times “mercy” and “compassion” are interchangeable words in the Scriptures.

To be merciful means to be full of compassion. To be full of compassion means to be merciful.

We read in our text that God’s tender mercies are over all His works. Not just mercy but mercies. Many people think of God’s mercy only in relation to salvation for sinners. And thank God, His mercy is extended to sinners and sinners can be saved if they will believe on and call on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

But the word “mercies” is plural. In other words, God was not just talking about the forgiveness of sins. He was also talking about all of God’s mercies, which also include all of God’s provisions.

Look at more scriptures that confirms this.

Psalm 119:41 NKJV

Let your mercies come also to me, O Lord – Your salvation according to Your word.

Psalm 106:7 NKJV

Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember the multitude of Your mercies, but rebelled by the sea – the Red Sea.

Notice we see again “mercies” not just “mercy”.

And here we see that the children of Israel did not remember the multitude of God’s mercies. In other words, God performed miraculous signs and wonders in delivering His people out of Egypt but when they hit a wall again that looked insurmountable, they began to complain and did not remember how His mercies delivered them before.

Likewise when we come up against a situation that looks impossible, we must choose to remember all His benefits and remember His tender mercies are over us. Remember the multitude of His mercies.

Psalm 103:1-5 NKJV

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:

Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,

Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,

Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Lamentations 3:22-23 NKJV

22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 MSG

God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, His merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They created new every morning. How great Your faithfulness!

God’s loyal love for you has not run out. His merciful love for you has not dried up. His love for you is new every morning. Choose to believe and receive it.

The Bible says the Lord never changes?

Malachi 3:6 NKJV

For I am the Lord, I do not change..

Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

God is the same now as He was in the Old Testament. If God was gracious and merciful to the children of Israel, He will be gracious and merciful to His born-again children today. He will be gracious and merciful towards you and your situation today.

To be merciful is the same as being full of compassion. And since God was full of compassion then, He will be full of compassion now, because God never changes.

Next week we will continue to look at The Mercies of God and see how God’s mercies brings deliverance, healing, the glory of God, and many other benefits.

But today, realize that nothing you do can make God love you more and nothing you do can make Him love you less. His love for you is perfect and constant.

Reach out by faith today and receive His love and His tender mercies because they are over you. He has crowned you with lovingkindness and tender mercies (Psalm 103:4).
